11.00 – Early Music for Children: Romeo & Juliet Choir

Throughout time, people have been fascinated by the stars, not least during the Renaissance. In this eventful concert, a quartet from the Romeo & Juliet Choir reveal their playful side.

Claudio Monteverdi's madrigals underlie a series of dramatic meetings between lovers. An intimate and emotional depiction of love in our time - where this exquisite 17th century music meets characters of the 21st century. With the English vocal ensemble I Fiagiolini.

2 pm – Seminar "Early Music in Turkey" (Kudsi Erguner)

Kudsi Erguner, an authority on early Turkish classical music introduces us to the unique sounds of the Ottoman empire.

6 pm – "Sultans and Dervishes" - Early Music from Turkey

The undisputed master of the Ney-flute, Kudsi Erguner from Turkey transports us on a mystical journey to the Ottoman realm, conjuring up the sounds and scents of the Orient and the atmosphere of the Dervish ceremonies.

9 pm – Missa Papalis

There could hardly be said to be another composition before Bach's time better known than Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli. The exquisitely magical counterpoint in this mass is performed by the German Ensemble Officium, specialising in the vocal polyphony of the Renaissance.

2 pm – "Medieval instruments in 'Le Jeu de Robin et Marion'"

Members of Micrologus talk about and demonstrate the instruments of perhaps the oldest opera of all.

4 pm – "Donaires" – Spanish Baroque Dance (EARLY STAGE)

Sarabandes, folias, gaillardes and chaconnes? Six dancers and six musicians combine castanets, hand clapping and footsteps to create irresistable rhythms from the age of Cervantes.

7 pm – Le Jeu de Robin et Marion

The world's first ever opera? The superb Italian ensemble Micrologus performs an intimate concert version of this medieval pastorale, which has everything: - love, class struggle, animal symbolism, song, dance and dialogue.
