Now the mystery is finally solved: the French 250-year jubilee, baroque master Jean-Philippe Rameau composed the famous piece "La poule" – the hen (grown up chicken!) – which therefore  came before the egg. This children´s show, a sounding and danceable parade based on Rameau´s animalistic opus, is especially written for SEMF by Anna Parrow and Maria Norgren. It tells a sparkling poetic story and is filled to the brim with music and acting. The performance is suitable for children up to 12 years.

KRAJA | Photo: ©Alexandra Andersson Ellis

The vocal quartet Kraja from Umeå in the north of Sweden has been singing together for 12 years and the members can, in spite of their young age, be considered to be veterans of Swedish traditional music. The repertoire, with its roots mainly in Swedish folksongs, is always performed in Kraja´s own characteristic four-part arrangements. Harmonies and sound colour have become characteristic of Kraja who today serves early Swedish folk music with their very own touch.

Where does all the Iberian folk music, that always seems to have been there, come from? Where does the flamenco have its roots? What did the long journey of the fandango from baroque up to nowadays look like? From castle and hut, from streets and celebration, filtered through the fiery sounding body of the baroque guitar, which provides the frantic rythms its special colour – new but old and oh so catchy…

Uruguayan born Rafael Bonavita is a multifaceted, internationally recognized musician and an innovator of the expressive and repertoire possibilities of the baroque guitar.

Ensemble Gilles Binchois | Photo: ©Ensemble Gilles Binchois

After 35 years of international activity and 40 CD-recordings, the Ensemble Gilles Binchois, conducted by Dominique Vellard, has assumed a special status among interpreters of sacred music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Associated with an excellent timbre and a dense vocal beauty, the ensemble tackles monody as well as polyphony with the same brilliance. In this concert the Spanish Golden Age is mainly represented by the 15th century composer Francisco de Peñalosa, one of his era´s most prolific composers, and his adorably beautiful mass  "Nunca fue pena mayor".

Ticket prices: 100-330 SEK. Student discount tickets can only be purchased at SEMF's ticket office during the festival 4-8 June

The Ensemble is supported by the French Ministry of Culture, the Regional Cultural Affairs Directorate in Burgundy and the Regional Council of Burgundy and the City of Dijon.

Imagine a 17th century salon in Italy where a woman is performing songs of betrayed, hopeful and unhappy love. One of the most important composers of the 17th century in Italy was Barbara Strozzi. As many other female artists, her work and life has been degraded and forgotten. Barbara Strozzi is the inspiration for Operabyrån's poetic and colourful performance.
