EARLY STAGE - Public Dress Rehearsal

BIRGER JARL OCH MECHTILD (UTTINI/JOHNSEN)

A milestone in Swedish music history is re-emerging. Singing soloists, dancers, choir and orchestra perform one of history's first operas in Swedish. "Birger Jarl and Mechtild" is a "medieval baroque opera", a play written for libretto in 1774 by Gustav III with music by Francesco Uttini and Philip Johnsen. The fascinating story of the Danish princess Mechtild's marriage to Birger Jarl, according to the founder of Erikskrönikan Stockholm, is in focus.

In this abbreviated staging, the divertissement Æglé, an "opera within an opera" constitutes the main part. Here, Birger Jarl and Mechtild change their characters into mythological creatures, as in a role-playing game.

In the roles: Thomas Volle, Helena Schuback and Minna Nyberg; dancers; the vocal ensemble VoNo; and ensemble Orfeus Barock. Directed by Mark Tatlow. Choreography by Patrik Sörling.

A unique opportunity to discover Swedish baroque opera and a sneak peek onto a new National stage for early music!

NOTE: for SEMFestival pass holders, only Monday's 6/6 3.30 pm performance of "Birger Jarl and Mechtild" applies.

In cooperation with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and Drottningholms Slottsteater.
